HISTORY OF THE HOME. Built in the 1840s by early settler James McGavock, this Federal style house with its two story Victorian styled addition is one of the earliest existing brick structures in Davidson County and has been determined eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Our goal is to renovate the building for BTAEC while maintaining the historic elements of the house. We additionally plan to liberate the basement from years of neglect to serve as an Underground Railroad museum and memorial to honor those who so bravely journeyed to their freedom.
RENOVATION. The Metro Historical Commission, the Center for Historic Preservation at MTSU, and the Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area are assisting with research and recommendations for the renovation. We hope to recruit skilled volunteers to complete as much of the work as possible. In addition, we will work diligently to procure building supplies at no cost or at discounted prices.
WHAT THE HOUSE OFFERS. This 6,000-square-foot historic house has an additional 2000 sq. ft. of attic space plus a basement. This large facility will allow BTAEC to maintain 2-3 computer labs with 12 computers in each lab, 4 large classrooms for assorted classes, a child care area for our students, a room for large community gatherings, a chapel, a student break room, restrooms, kitchen facilities, offices for staff, and storage space which will include a clothing closet for students to select outfits for interviews and getting started on their new jobs.
THE LEASE. BTAEC will eventually be located in the McGavock Mills House at 908 Meridian St., across the street from Ray of Hope Community Church, which owns the property. Ray of Hope has generously leased this historic building to us for $1/year.
UNTIL THEN. Until renovation of our new home is complete, Ray of Hope Community Church (located in the former Meridian Street United Methodist Church) has graciously agreed to let us use their facility for classes and office space.
